About Us

The Elkton Historical Society was organized in 1999  and is chartered as a Nonprofit Organization for the purpose of identifying and preserving valuable historical assets, such as homes, records, photographs, artifacts, special architecture and art, and making them available to anyone interested in the history of Elkton and the surrounding communities in southeastern Giles County, TN. 

Meetings are held monthly, at 7:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday, at the Elkton Community Center.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Elkton was established on the Elk River in 1808.  It was located on a major stage coach route between Decatur, AL and Nashville, TN.  Elkton thrived as a river  town and steam boat stop through the 19th Century.  Elkton was located along Benge’s Route of Indian Removal 1838 - 1839.  General William T. Sherman and his Union forces  camped  in Elkton and vicinity during his march to Atlanta. Elkton is the site of the Matt Gardner House, c. 1896, home of a former slave and founder of the first black school in Giles County.
